Each member of the Initiative Clause Sociale (social clause initiative) (Auchan, Camif, Carrefour,
Casino, Cora, Galeries Lafayette, E.Leclerc, Jules, Monoprix, Okaïdi, groupe PPR, Système U)
has established its own code of conduct. Clauses of the ICS are based on the main ILO
conventions and recommendations and on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. They
make up the minimum requirements which are found in each group‘s code of conduct.
Child labour
Minimum working age is 15, except in some developing countries where children are allowed to
work from the age of 14. Minimum working age should also depend on the hardness of the
work. On this account, young adults under 18 must not do night work or any work putting their
security at risk.
Forced labour
Forced labour is forbidden. It is also forbidden to retain employees’ identification cards or to ask
for a deposit from new employees.
Discrimination
Discriminatory practices based on race, gender, colour of skin, religion, political affiliation, caste,
sexual orientation, or other grounds are not permitted.
Disciplinary practices, harassment or ill treatments
Employees must be treated with respect and cannot not be subjected to ill treatments, either
physical or psychological.
Freedom of association
Employees have the freedom to associate and the right to collective bargaining, within the
framework of national regulations. They should be able to exercise this right without being
subjected to pressure or discrimination from their employers.
Working hours
Working hours have to conform to local regulations. If no local rule is set, international laws will
apply. Freely worked overtime must not exceed legal limits and is to be paid at legal rate. For a
working period of 7 days, there must be at least one day of rest.
Wages and benefits
Employees must receive at least the legal minimum wage fixed in their country and legal
benefits. They should be informed about the rules fixing wages, and especially about those
regulating overtime pay. Paid leave, if granted by local rules must be given according to local
requirements.
Health and Safety
Work environment must be healthy and safe.
